Kvyat: I don’t know what happened

Kvyat crash Austria red Bull Ring Toro Rosso

Daniil Kvyat was lucky to walk away unharmed after a high speed crash during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, and afterwards joined a chorus of drivers questioning the safety of the ‘sausage’ kerbs dotted around the Red Bull Ring track.

Speaking to media after the crash, Kvyat admitted, “I don’t know what happened. The suspension broke, very weird. Once it broke it just steered me to the right. After a puncture earlier, we have lots of things to investigate.”

Replays seem to suggest a suspension failure on the right rear of the Toro Rosso, which resulted in Kvyat’s car spinning before slamming the wall – the impact was big.

Kvyat explained, “The one that was on the kerb didn’t break. You’re not in control once you’re on them. If the suspension breaks, you’re not in control any more and that’s not very cool.”

The Russian, who was recently demoted from the Red Bull team, did not hold back in his criticism of the track which was resurfaced and revamped ahead of the race weekend.

“They wanted to make it better but they actually made it worse. The track limits is a issue. The kerbs are very dangerous,” added Kvyat.
