In the aftermath of a dramatic Austrian Grand Prix qualifying session, at the end of which he was on pole, Lewis Hamilton voiced his concern with regards to the kerbs on the Red Bull Ring track which claimed another victim.
Toro Rosso driver Daniel Kvyat walked away from a high speed crash caused by an apparent suspension failure, caused when his car hit the kerb at high speed.
“I don’t know what happened,” admitted Kvyat. “The suspension broke, very weird. Once it broke it just steered me to the right. After a puncture earlier, we have lots of things to investigate.”
After claiming his 54th top spot start, Hamilton told media, “I can’t speak for the other drivers but from me looking at it, those yellow kerbs are quite dangerous,” Hamilton said after claiming pole position.”
“We’ve seen a couple of incidents already. I don’t know how many more it’s going to take before a car ends up in the wall and perhaps someone gets hurt.”
“I’m sure [race director] Charlie [Whiting] and the FIA are looking at it but it’s definitely an area we can improve. I think the idea’s good because they don’t want us running wide and using the outside of the circuit but perhaps another solution is going to be needed,” added the reigning F1 world champion.
Max Verstappen, who was a victim of the kerbs omn the opening day, said, “All the drivers were very happy with the kerbs, so maybe now they’re not so happy some of them.”
“Definitely in turn eight, that one is pretty dangerous as you could see with the crash of Daniil,” added the Red Bull driver.
The matter appears to have devided opinions among the drivers, with Kimi Raikkonen telling media, “It doesn’t mean that the kerb is to blame. We have heavier kerbs in other places. We don’t seem to have any issues.”
“The kerbs here get rougher when you run wide where you shouldn’t really be, so if you’re in doubt then stay away from it,” added the Ferrari driver.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had a couple of kerb related incidents on Friday, while Nico Rosberg crashed heavily in the final half of FP3 when he hit the kerbs with a broken suspension. He also hit the barriers with a heavy impact.
