McLaren chief Zak Brown has high hopes for the team’s rookie Stoffel Vandoorne, rating him among the sport’s great drivers and predicting that the Belgian is Formula 1 world champion material.
Brown of his drivers, “With Fernando Alonso and Stoffel we have two top drivers. Vandoorne could potentially belong at the absolute top. That’s right, I count Stoffel on the same list as Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Ayrton Senna.”
Indeed Vandoorne was impressive in his grand prix debut in Bahrain last year where he deputised for injured Alonso. That weekend he beat veteran teammate Jenson Button and scored points in his debut.
Since then he has been on the F1 sidelines, waiting patiently for his turn to become Alonso’s teammate, in place of Button.
Brown predicted confidently, “Stoffel and Fernando together in one team will be great. Stoffel is an incredible driver, a future world champion. He will probably make some rookie mistakes, but he will learn quickly.”
