Amid reports pf a rift between Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabane and Sebastian Vettel, the German has hailed the work being done by the team chief and believes that the legendary team will be among the pace setters soon.
Vettel told media ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, “Co-ordinating 1,300 people is not very easy, but I think the people we have in charge, particularly Maurizio, is doing a very good job. Things are coming along and looking promising for the future but for sure it’s up to us to show that. You can say how can it be that it’s improving, but we don’t see that. You always get measured after the results you have.”
“Once you put something strong in place… I’ve been part of that process before with Red Bull where it took time and the day that they really started to be serious was probably back in 2005, the day they won races was 2009 so it took some time for them, it took some time for Mercedes.
“I think it always takes time if you try to raise the bar again and come back to the front. It does take time for people to really work hand in hand and things come together, but once they do it usually clicks and it works and that’s when the results come as well.”
“The results haven’t been there for a while so obviously there’s something that needs to be improved and I think we are working on that. I don’t want to share too much of that because it’s not my job or responsibility to explain. Its other people inside the team that you can ask, they are better to explain probably.
“Just imagine you have a lot of people, you always hear that the cars are getting more complex, everything needs to run hand in hand. It’s not like 20 or 30 years ago where you build the cars, you have an engine, you have a chassis and you had a bit of aerodynamics, just before winter testing you put everything together and you see how it works.
“Everything works hand in hand, the people need to work hand in hand, you need to be ready to go forward and change your view of what’s right and what’s wrong because you always try to raise the bar, re-define what you can do and try to find a better, smarter, lighter, more efficient way of doing things and I think in that regard I think we’ve grown a lot, it’s a process that I think takes time, it doesn’t happen overnight.”
The fact remains that Ferrari have yet to score a victory this season, and by current form it is unlikely that they will unless something drastic happens to both Mercedes drivers and the Red Bull duo.
Vettel acknowledges, “I agree on the fact that we didn’t get the results, can’t excuse that, but I think there’s a lot of work going in at the factory, a lot of things have changed fundamentally since the day that I joined, I think to the better,” he said. “Unfortunately in Formula One it doesn’t happen with a mouse click, to have the results on the track.
“Of course it’s always the results that people have in their heads and you’ll be measured based on your latest results, which is fair enough, its part of the game. It’s the same for other people as well, no different to us, I don’t think it should be.
“It’s clear that we have very high ambitions and targets, and if we don’t meet them then of course we are disappointed as well. As I said we are putting a lot of effort and work in to try and change that.”
“The level has been fairly high the day I joined but I think we raised the bar again. We are trying to raise it even more for next year, trying to connect everyone and try to work as a team, because we have a lot of people, we have a lot of intelligent, clever, smart people and try to get them together to work on one project.
“Our understanding of this year’s car and the cars we’ve recently built has become a lot better, which should help us again in the future hopefully, but I’m fairly confident on that point. How much with the rule changes obviously all depends on what other people are doing, what they are thinking, if somebody comes out with a clever idea or not.”
