Wolff: Pressure is on both in different ways

With both Mercedes drivers – Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg – battling it out in a tense and intriguing Formula 1 world title battle, team chief Toto Wolff believes that the the duo are under pressure – albeit different types of pressure with three rounds remaining in the championship.

Speaking ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, Wolff said, “The pressure is on both in different ways. Nico was very strong in Singapore, Lewis in Malaysia, Nico again in Japan and then Lewis back on top in the USA. It keeps bouncing between the two, so I’m really curious how it’s going to go from here.”

Analysing Rosberg’s position as championship leader, Wolff explained, “He is in a difficult position. He needs to look at each weekend at a time, which is what he does. But he needs to make sure he does not DNF, which is the most important.

“You could probably see it in Turn 1 [in Austin], whether that plays a role, I don’t know I haven’t spoken to him [about it] yet.”

At the United States Grand Prix the momentum went the way of Hamilton for the first time since July, after the summer break Rosberg won every race until they arrived in Texas.

While the reigning champion took maximum points in the USA, Rosberg did what he had to do by finishing second and thus head to Mexico with a handy 26 points lead. Nevertheless, for both it was mission accomplished.

Asked which of the drivers has the most pressure, Wolff ventured, “I think both. One needs to make sure he doesn’t DNF and the other needs to score and win. If I could choose I would go for Nico, but it’s only on pure probability.”
