Lewis Hamilton appears to have found something extra around the newly surfaced Sepang circuit, as he powered around in a best time that was over half a second faster than his title rival and Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg as the two square up for the final six race shootout for the Formula 1 world title.
The reigning world champion’s best time of 1:34.434 was 0.445 of a second up on next best Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, and 0.619 of a second up on Rosberg.
After a low key Friday, Red Bull have upped the ante with Verstappen looking particularly feisty on his way to second on the timing sheets and half a second up on his teammate Daniel Ricciardo in sixth.
Splitting the Red Bull duo were the Ferrari pair of Kimi Raikkonen and last year’s winner Sebastian Vettel, ending the one hour fourth and fifth respectively.
