Hamilton: I don’t understand it

Lewis Hamilton topped the timing screens at the end of FP1 in Monaco, but a few hours later in FP2 he struggled for pace and finished in an unfamiliar eighth place, admitting that he and his Mercedes team do not understand the problem.

Hamilton told journalists at the end of the first day in Monaco, “I can’t [explain it] because I don’t understand it. FP1 was really good and the car was feeling great and then it was a night and day difference, black and white, in FP2.”

With teammate Valtteri Bottas down in tenth inevitably cynics were suggesting that the Silver Arrows were sandbagging.

But Hamilton is adamant, “Something’s wrong and we are just trying to understand why the tyres aren’t working.”

“We couldn’t work the tyres for whatever reason and there was a lot of sliding about. So there is a lot of studying to do to try and understand where we went wrong, but I’m confident in my guys that they will find it.”

“It feels the same as before it’s just the car is a lot better and there is a lot more grip. If anything it is slightly easier,” added the Mercedes driver who will be seeking his 65th pole position on Saturday to draw level with the record of Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna.
