Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel tore up the form book to top the timing screens at the end of Free Practice 2 on day one of the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, although he was only fractionally up on the best of the two Silver Arrows behind him, the indications are that the Ferrari – with their latest updates – is handy around Autodrome Hermanos Rodriguez.

Vettel’s best time of 1:19.790 was a mere four thousandth of a second up on Lewis Hamilton who, in turn, was half a second up on his Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg. But the consensus in the media centre is that Mercedes have not dialed up the power on tap as the focus for the remaining three decisive races is on reliability.

Kimi Raikkonen was fourth fastest in the other Ferrari, ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in fifth with Max Verstappen seventh – the energy drinks outfit also appearing to be saving their best for later.

Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg, was sixth fastest, splitting the two Red Bull’s on the time sheets.
