Chassis crack forces Jolyon Palmer to skip Mexico GP qualifying

MyF1World

Jolyon Palmer sat out Formula 1 qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix, after cracking his Renault's chassis during final practice.

Palmer sustained the damage after running over a kerb during the final warm-up session in Mexico City, in which he finished 14th quickest.

Palmer was 1.8s behind pacesetter Max Verstappen in his Red Bull, and 0.4s ahead of team-mate Kevin Magnussen, and believed he had a shot of making it through to the second segment of the qualifying session.

Via a tweet Palmer confirmed: "I won't be taking part in quali after we found a crack in the chassis. Big shame as we were 14th in FP3 and aiming for Q2 again."

With a chassis change a time-consuming process, the team had no chance of getting the car prepared in time for qualifying.

It means Palmer will now start from the pitlane for Sunday's race, in line with F1 regulations, once the team has changed his car's survival cell.
