Fernando Alonso will start the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix from the back of the grid because he is to test an updated Honda power unit at Sepang.
The McLaren driver will get a 30-place grid penalty for using more than the permitted number of engine parts.
The new version of the power unit has upgraded parts including a lighter engine block for better reliability as well as a redesigned exhaust system to boost efficiency.
The new engine will break cover at Sepang on Friday for both free practice sessions before the team switches back to the older spec engine which teammate Jenson Button is also running.
As a result Alonso will be using an eighth internal combustion engine, turbocharger, and MGU-H; his seventh control electronics and battery energy store.
If tests are positive, Alonso will then use the updated power unit for the entire Japanese Grand Prix weekend.
Meanwhile, Honda is not planning for Button to use the new power unit at Suzuka so that he does not incur any grid penalties at their all important home race.
