Montreal FP1: Hamilton and Vettel set the pace

Lewis Hamilton was a tad short of two tenths faster than Formula 1 World Championship title rival Sebastian Vettel as he set the early pace in the first free practice of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Hamilton, in the Mercedes, was 0.198 of a second clear of Ferrari’s Vettel with their team-mates Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen third and fourth respectively.

Fernando Alonso’s return to Formula 1 after missing the Monaco Grand Prix ended with the Spaniard stopping on track with a lack of hydraulic pressure, to compound the misery for McLaren and Honda.
