Vettel: So far pretty bad

MyF1World

Sebastian Vettel has yet to come to grips around the slippery Circuit de Catalunya ending both free practice sessions, on day one of the Spanish Grand Prix, fourth fastest.

In FP1 he was a second off the pace set by Mercedes, but shaved that down to four tenths by the end of FP2, but admitted afterwards that he was not yet fully comfortable in the cockpit of the SF70-H.

He summed up his day to journalists afterwards, “So far pretty bad. I struggled a bit with the car balance in general so conditions today seemed to be quite challenging. I think we would have loved to do a bit more running, get a bit of a better feel for the car. It was OK but as I said, we can improve.”

Vettel has won twice in four starts so far this season and leads the championship standings by 13 points.

“I feel good,” he continued. “Today I don’t feel so good inside the car and it was quite slippery but I think it was due to the conditions. I think everybody was struggling a bit.”

Traditionally the first race in Europe sees teams bolt on a raft of upgrades to their cars, this time around was no exception.

He said of this, “I don’t know who brought the most updates, but I don’t think it matters who brought the most. It matters who brought the best.”

“[For us] some of them are more visual than others. I’m happy with what we have brought, some of the stuff you can see, some of the stuff you will not see, so no secrets but the usual work.”

Mercedes set the pace on the opening day in Barcelona with some handy upgrades and as a result their drivers hogged the top of the timing screens throughout the day, ending fastest of the lot.

“I don’t know what Mercedes was up to. It looks like it will be between them and us, but as I said I wasn’t happy. I think there was quite a lot left on the track which I did not find yet. So need to have a look tonight,” added Vettel.
