From very bad to even worse for Alonso

Things went from bad to worse for Fernando Alonso 12 minutes into free practice for his home Spanish Grand Prix, as yet another Honda power unit went up in smoke to cut short his session and continue misery for the Spaniard and his McLaren team.

Fresh from not even starting the Russian Grand Prix, when his engine expired on the formation lap, Alonso was upbeat on Thursday and was hoping that there would be an improvement in fortunes for the Woking outfit and indeed himself.

He told reporters on Thursday, “We need to raise our game and hopefully finish with both cars this race and accumulate some mileage. Some things that we need to put in place, starting this weekend, for the rest of the season. So hopefully this is the starting point of a new championship for us.”

But the reality is that Honda have no apparent solution for the crisis that is afflicting their team. Apart from zero reliability they also have produced a power unit which well off the pace, despite trumpeting before the end of the season that they adopted a totally new concept for this season, which clearly has not worked.

“Engine. Engine problem,” reported Alonso on his out-lap when trouble struck early in FP1. Alonso got sideways but caught it before coming to a stop. The car ending up on the side of the track smoking and with liquid leaking from the bottom of the car.
