Drivers and teams report from the second and final day of in-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit.
Renault
Sergey Sirotkin: “It was quite a good, and quite a busy day, and it was great to be out in action as I’ve been waiting for this day a very long time! I enjoyed every second of being in the car, even if the programme was not the most exciting for the driver. The car is amazingly quick and I noticed the difference in grip immediately from the previous generation. That said, you soon get used to the extra speed. I can’t wait to get to Sochi.”
Alan Permane, Sporting Director: “Today went completely to plan. Sergey impressed us as he was quickly up to speed and didn’t put a foot wrong despite having not driven since the end of last year. We completed a full programme including evaluations of suspension, set-ups, aero, tyre and wind tunnel correlation work. As with yesterday, we weren’t chasing particular headline times for the day, rather building a basis for further pace at the forthcoming races and we’re confident that the work done here will be highly beneficial in that aim.”
Red Bull
Pierre Gasly: “It was great to be in a Formula One car again. It’s always really exciting, especially in the new F1 cars, which are so much quicker than last year’s. It was a pretty busy programme this morning mostly because of the time lost yesterday. There were a lot of aero tests and some long runs, so we achieved quite a lot this morning. Unfortunately we had a mechanical issue at the end of the morning that stopped us a bit earlier than we wanted and we missed some running time in the afternoon. However, apart from that it was a mega experience. It always feels amazing to drive one of these cars. Now I head to Japan for the first race of the Super Formula Championship, which I’m really looking forward to.”
Jeff Calam, Senior Projects Engineer : “We had a pretty full morning today, picking up some of the things we didn’t get through yesterday. So that meant more aero mapping and data gathering, followed by some longer runs, race simulation work mainly. Unfortunately, we then had a technical issue with the car around lunchtime, which proved quite complex to remedy. However, the boys did a superb job to get the car back out with just under an hour to go and we spent the remainder of the session just gaining as much information as we could. Pierre did a very good job for us today, especially as this was his first experience of the car and with the limits on his track time. We have learned a lot here in Bahrain and we’ve definitely got new insights into the RB13, which will certainly help in the upcoming races.”
Haas
Kevin Magnussen: “We got some good laps in, some good testing today. There should be some interesting stuff for the coming races. Some of the work we did today was a bit of a carryover from yesterday with Romain, but we did some new stuff as well, which was good. All in all, it’s been a productive day.”
Williams
Rod Nelson, Chief Test & Support Engineer: It’s been a very productive day. The morning was mostly spent undertaking aero investigations, and in the afternoon we covered some chassis and tyre work. It’s really interesting to get another driver’s point of view and look at the differences in driving style from someone so experienced. It was really useful feedback for us moving forward. We finished off the afternoon with some more aero runs, race starts and set-up. We really covered everything in the plan over the 126 laps that we completed. So it was a very good session.
Gary Paffett: It’s been a while since I’ve done a full test in a Formula One car! It’s really good to be back in the car, really good. The cars this year with the increased downforce, and more grip in the tyres, are really nice to drive. We’ve had a really good day. We’ve done a lot of laps, which is really good, and we got all of our testing done. That’s the purpose really, to get all the testing done, and then for me to go back and validate the simulator. So overall it was really nice to drive the car and I’m very happy with how the day went.
McLaren-Honda
Stoffel Vandoorne: “Today has probably been our best day this season so far. It’s the first time that we’ve had a day without any big problems, where we could actually get on with our programme. I think we completed everything we wanted to do today, and we went through a lot of set-up stuff that we didn’t manage to do in Barcelona. It’s been a very productive day and I’m very happy that we’ve been able to do so many laps. Especially after a difficult day yesterday and a difficult weekend, it wasn’t looking great, but I’m very pleased. For the team, it’s not been an easy week, after a double-header and then coming to the test with so many issues. They’ve been working flat-out, and they’ve done a very good job to get the car back out on track every time. Today was really good, but we need every day to be this good, and there are no guarantees that it will be like this next time. We need to learn very carefully from what we’ve done today, and hopefully carry that forward to the next event and see some improvements. It’s been very good for both me and the team to be able to try a number of different directions with the set-up. There were some new bits on the car – quite fundamental things – that we wanted to try out, and learn about, so it’s been really useful to see where the performance comes from, and very productive.
“Today and all weekend I’ve actually felt very comfortable in the car. The chassis is behaving well, and we’ll bring some more new bits to the car over the next few races. The key is to be able to have a weekend where everything runs smoothly, which we haven’t been able to do yet. If we can do that, hopefully we can show we are making progress. We just need to keep working hard and wait for the moment when everything falls together.”
Eric Boullier, Racing Director: “Everything has worked perfectly today in terms of reliability, and we were even able to push a little bit in terms of settings. We’ve managed a ‘proper’ test today, and really made the most of every opportunity out on track. Everything we’ve planned, we’ve tested, and we’ve done back-to-back runs, so I’m really happy with the work we’ve completed today. It’s complicated to understand the issues we’ve had over the past few days, since today we’ve managed to run without any problems, but Honda are working hard to understand where the weaknesses lie. We’ve been able to run with a more aggressive set-up today, gathered a lot of information and tested a lot of solutions, so in terms of both data and results it’s, been a very positive day of testing. It’s certainly been a trying couple of weeks for everyone at McLaren-Honda, and I can’t thank the team enough for the long hours, hard work and incredible effort they’ve put in after a long period away from home. Oliver and Stoffel, too, have both done a sterling job, and, for Stoffel in particular, the mileage we’ve been able to cover today after difficult back-to-back race weekends for him has been priceless. Being able to do a good amount of running on the final day has come at the right time. Now, we’ll head back to the factory with even more motivation to keep pushing forward. It’s a quick turnaround to crunch the numbers and prepare ourselves for Sochi, which for sure will be another tough weekend for us, but, as always, we’re ready for the challenge.”
Satoshi Nakamura, Honda R&D Principal Engineer: “Despite having a disappointing first day of testing yesterday, today we were able to conduct our plan in accordance with the original schedule and completed 81 laps of useful running. After facing MGUH issues during the Bahrain Grand Prix, we made concerted efforts to analyse the issue in a short period of time ahead of this test. Based on this analysis, we implemented provisional countermeasures against the issue on our PU and we think we were able to confirm the direction of our solution with today’s running. We also made some progress today with the set-up of our PU in order to acquire better driveability and reduce the vibration. I want to thank all the members of the McLaren-Honda team who worked tirelessly throughout the days and nights to prepare for the test, even after the tough grand prix we had here in Bahrain. Although we are still in behind our competitors in terms of performance, we are confident that we’re heading in the right direction. We believe our PU still has more potential and we will continue our development utilising all of the information we have gathered from this test in order to close the gap to our competitors as soon as possible. We have less than 10 days to go before the Russian Grand Prix, and we are expecting another tough race there. However, we will keep fighting hard together with McLaren in order to move forward.”
Force India
Esteban Ocon: “My focus today was on short performance runs. When you test a few days after the race at the same circuit it’s a good chance to make comparisons and feel the improvements to the car. Track temperatures were really hot this morning, but the car felt good in these conditions, which is a good sign.”
Sergio Perez: “It was only a half day in the car for me, but it was useful to have a solid afternoon to learn some things away from a race weekend. I worked on our race performance, which is one of our strengths, but there are still areas we need to improve. 70 laps is more than a race distance and we’ve learned some things that will help us in the races coming up.”
Tom McCullough, Chief Race Engineer: “It’s been a very productive day, which allowed us to catch up with the test items that we didn’t manage to evaluate yesterday. This morning Esteban focussed on performance running and in the afternoon Sergio worked on long runs. We have collected a lot of the correlation data which will improve our understanding of the VJM10 in the short and the long term.”
Mercedes
Valtteri Bottas: “Today was very good. We got so much running done. We were focusing all-day on the long-run pace, which was a bit of a problem for us on Sunday compared to Ferrari. We did some interesting tests to try and improve both the tyre life and the race pace. We have definitely got plenty to analyse tonight. I think I learned a few tricks today as well. To stay here in Bahrain for a test after two back to back races is tough, but the guys have done a great job over these two days of testing. Now we head home for a few days before the next race in Russia.”
Sauber
Pascal Wehrlein: “A very positive test on this track, I am really happy with how everything went today. I was able to gain more experience with the car and also together with the team. We ran through our programme without any issues, while we learned lessons about the set-up getting a better understanding of it. Now I am looking forward to a few days off and then I can’t wait for the next race in Sochi.”
Toro Rosso
Daniil Kvyat: “A very productive test for both myself and the team – considering it was only half a day, we managed to do plenty of laps, so we can be happy. It’s all been very positive and the car is reliable. After a very long three weeks, I have to say thank you to all the mechanics for their great effort today – they are tired and still did an impeccable job. It was useful to be able to try a few things that are sometimes a bit risky to try in Free Practice sessions during a race weekend, so this was the time to do this. We now have a lot of data to go through and we will use this in order to get ready for my home race in Russia and the rest of the upcoming races.”
Carlos Sainz: “I think we can be very happy with how this test went, both yesterday with Sean and today with Daniil and myself – to have two clean days and be able to test many parts was just what we needed. I’d like to thank the team and Renault, as it’s been very useful. Overall, I end a positive day with very good feelings and lots of things learned. I now look forward to the next race weekend in Russia!”
Jody Egginton, Head of Vehicle Performance: “Following a productive day yesterday with Sean, Daniil and Carlos took over driving duties today. The plan was to continue to evaluate the range of new mechanical updates we had available for this test, together with some tyre based tests. Daniil’s day started well, with some aero dedicated runs, followed by normal baseline setting runs. After this we moved on to some more specific tests, evaluating some mechanical set-up items the results of which were positive. This means we can consider these parts for a race introduction. Carlos took over driving duties for the afternoon, running some further aero-dedicated tests and then moving on to evaluate mechanical test items as well as conducting a small tyre test program. All of this happened as planned and some good set-up directions were identified, combined with a good amount of kilometres put on these new parts. In summary, as a team, we can be happy with the execution of the test program here in Bahrain. Some positive results have been obtained and this should provide further set-up options for the following races. We now head home for a few days before moving on to Russia for the next Grand Prix, where we will aim to put what we have learned here to good use.”
