Perez ditches sponsor after Trump victory

Force India driver Sergio Perez has disassociated himself with and ditched one of his sponsors over a tasteless tweet made by the sunglasses company in the immediate wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the USA elections.

Perez said he was “breaking his relationship” with sunglasses company Hawkers, with immediate effect, after the offensive message on Twitter.

The tweet essentially proclaims that Mexicans can use Hawkers brand sunglasses in order to hide their “crying eyes tomorrow when you are building the wall” which Trump promised to do in his election campaign.

Subsequent tweets from the Mexican-run account, including a video message, attempted to mollify the outrage that followed, pointing out the tweet was not intended as “mockery”, but more as a self-depracating take on the course of events north of the border and its impact on Mexico.

Whatever the intent, Perez certainly wasn’t laughing and hit back with a tweet of his own,“Really bad comment. Today I am breaking my relationship with @HawkersMX. I will never let anyone make fun of my country.”
