Formula 1 world championship leader Nico Rosberg, in the Mercedes, ended the first day of the United States Grand Prix weekend at the top of the timing sheets.
Rosberg ended the day two-tenths of a second up on Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and with FP1 pacesetter Lewis Hamilton a further tenth of a second behind in third.
Sebastian Vettel was fastest of the Ferrari duo in fourth place, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen the only other driver to finish within a second of Rosberg’s top time.
The Force India duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez were sixth and seventh respectively, followed by Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso in the McLarens. Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top ten.
A brief red-flag stoppage caused by debris on the track disrupted teams’ long-run programmes in what was an otherwise largely uneventful session.
Manor’s Esteban Ocon, Renault’s Jolyon Palmer and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz all spun off track during the 90 minutes, but all were able to continue.
