Force India chief operating officer Otmar Szafnauer is adamant that Sergio Perez is contracted to the team for 2017, suggesting that the Mexican is simply hyping the situation.

On day one of the Italian Grand Prix weekend, Szafnauer was quizzed by BBC about the status of Perez’s contract, he responded firmly, “Sergio is signed up for next year, so there is nothing to negotiate.”

However, when asked at Spa about his future plans, the 26-year-old said, “I hope soon — before the start of the races in Asia.”

But at Monza on Friday, Szafnauer was adamant, “All drivers try to big themselves for various reasons. I can assure you he is signed up.”

The Mexican has substantial backing from his home country and has been a constant player during the current F1 silly season. He was supposedly a candidate for a Ferrari seat before the Italian team confirmed Kimi Raikkonen for another year.

Right now Perez is being linked to Williams, who have confirmed Felipe Massa’s exit, and he is also reportedly on the Renault list.

Meanwhile, adding credence to Szafnauer’s comments is the fact that recently Perez told reporters, “There is no team that does so much with its money. If I have my way, I will drive for Force India next year.”
