Vettel: I didn’t think we were behind Red Bull

Despite finishing fourth, behind the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo, Sebastian Vettel believes that Ferrari had the better car at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Vettel explained after the race, “We knew that we could put Red Bull under pressure but we didn’t think Ricciardo would pit as early as he did. I was faster on fresh tyres, but overtaking proved difficult. I was nearly a second faster at the end, but this track is a bit like Monaco.”

“I didn’t think we were behind Red Bull. Perhaps the results say that, but I don’t think that’s the case in terms of pace. It will be up to us to have a good Saturday and qualify well [in Germany]. After that we will be favourites on Sunday.”

One of the highlights of a somewhat mundane race was the battle for fifth between Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull’s Max Verstapppen. The veteran simply could not find a way around the teenager as the pair locked horns throughout the final half of the race, making contact during their on track duel.

Raikkonen, who was clearly faster at that point in the race, was aggrieved by Verstappen’s aggressive defensive tactics.

“It isn’t up to me to decide whether his driving was wrong or not,” commented Raikkonen after the race at Hungaroring. “But I’ve seen drivers penalised for much less,” he stated, clearly of the opinion that Verstappen moved around the track to prevent a pass.”

“The car was good today but we weren’t in the right position. I’m disappointed as the car responded well, but this isn’t an easy track to overtake on,” added the Finn.
