Local Lewis Hamilton topped the first free practice session of the the British Grand Prix weekend, pipping his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg to the top of the timing screens by the smallest of margins.
Hamilton’s best lap time of 1:31.654 was a mere 0.033 of a second up on Rosberg, with fellow Mercedes powered Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg next best albeit eight-tenths off Hamilton’s top time.
Sebastian Vettel was fourth fastest for Ferrari, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in fifth for Red Bull, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen sixth and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen seventh.
Force India’s Sergio Perez, Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten, who were separated by two seconds.
GP3 Series driver Charles Leclerc had a successful first F1 debut with Haas in place of team regular Esteban Gutierrez.
Monaco-born Leclerc survived an early spin at Village and finished 18th on the timing screens, a quarter second down on team mate Romain Grosjean.
