Nico Rosberg set the pace in the second free practice of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, while his Mercedes teammate and title rival Lewis Hamilton crashed four laps into the afternoon session.
After ending comfortably one-two in the morning FP1, Mercedes’ day took a turn for the worse when Hamilton locked up going through Turn 11, he spun and slammed sideways into the barrier.
He returned to the pits, where after a medical check-up followed from which he reported that he was fine. He did not return to the track as the team busied themselves repairing the damage on his car.
In the morning, at Hungaroring, the Mercedes duo enjoyed a 1.5 seconds gap to their closest rivals, but in the afternoon stanza Rosberg’s best lap time of 1:20.435 was down to half a second on Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull, who ended second quickest.
Sebastian Vettel was third in the Ferrari, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fourth on the timing screens at the end of the ninety minute session.
