After the German Grand Prix, Formula 1 goes into a summer break for most of August but before that Red Bull want to be ahead of Ferrari in the points standings, however he is adamant that his team have not settled for second best.
Indeed in the last couple of races the energy drinks team have closed the gap to the Maranello outfit, but in truth on race pace the two teams appear to be tied in the pecking order.
But Red Bull team chief Christian Horner told ESPN that he wants that to change, “Our target is to try and go into the summer break ahead of Ferrari. That’s going to be tough at Hockenheim because it’s a track that probably won’t be one of our strongest but we’re looking forward to it.”
With Mercedes still dominant, Horner was asked if he was settling for second best, and he replied, “Well we haven’t settled for second because we still have to achieve it. There’s still a long way to go in this championship.”
After Hungary Horner told media that the deficit between Red Bull’s TAG Heuer badged Renault engine was between 45 bhp and 50 bhp down on Mercedes.
Horner explained, “I think at times we’ve seen Mercedes’ true performance. [Hungary is] similar to Monaco but it’s not quite the same and the next big opportunity for us will be Singapore. They’ve got quite a lot of pace in hand so there is still quite some way that we have to go to close that down.”
