Daniel Ricciardo delivered a superb performance to claim pole position for the Monaco grand Prix, a career first top spot start for the Red Bull driver who has been in the zone throughout the weekend on the streets of Monte Carlo.
The big smiling Australian overcame a resurgent Mercedes team, in what was a bittersweet session for the energy drinks team whose star rookie Max Verstappen – Spanish Grand Prix winner two weeks ago – went from hero-to-zero when he stuck it into the wall after clipping the barrier around the swimming pool complex.
Lewis Hamilton survived a scare in Q3 when he stopped before the exit of the pits with a technical issue. He was wheeled back for a quick fix in the pit garage before returning to the track and claiming second place on the timing screens, ahead of his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in thrid.
Sebastian Vettel was fourth in the Ferrari, faster than his teammate Kimi Raikkonen in sixth sixth with Nico Hulkenberg sandwiched between the two Red’s. Raikkonen will drop five grid places.
