Antonio Giovinazzi picks up F1 grid penalty for Chinese GP

MyF1World

Antonio Giovinazzi has taken a Formula 1 grid penalty for the Chinese Grand Prix after Sauber was forced to change his gearbox.

The Italian crashed heavily at the end of Q1, and team boss Monisha Kaltenborn has confirmed that the team had no choice but to fit a new gearbox, although it was able to keep his race chassis.

Giovinazzi drops from 15th to 18th, gifting places to Stoffel Vandoorne, Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon, but remaining ahead of Romain Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer, who were penalised for not slowing sufficiently for the yellow flags brought out by his crash.

All those near the back of the grid could still take the option of starting from the pitlane with a changed set-up due to the mixed weather conditions.

However the indications are that the track will be drying as the race approaches, so there is unlikely to be a benefit from moving towards a wet set-up.
