Sauber have stated that Pascal Wehrlein is still undergoing medical examinations for injuries sustained in a scary crash at this year’s Race of Champions (ROC), while playing down speculation that their new driver will not be fit for the first Formula 1 pre-season test.
Wehrlein withdrew from ROC Nations Cup in Miami, Florida, after losing control of his three-wheeled Polaris Slingshot, flipping dangerously over the barriers while racing Felipe Massa in a similar car.
Sauber have confirmed that Wehrlein’s fitness is still being moniored ahead of the 27 February test in Barcelona.
Sauber wrote on Twitter: “Current rumors about Pascal Wehrlein in the media: The medical examinations are still ongoing. Therefore, the reports are pure speculations. We will provide information in due time.”
Wehrlein will be racing for Sauber after spending his F1 rookie season with the now defunct Manor team. The highly rated German is part of the Mercedes young driver programme.
