Six years ago Robert Kubica suffered a horrifying injury as a result of a crash during the first stage of the Ronde di Andora rally, at the time he was on the cusp of Formula 1 super-stardom but his career – at the pinnacle of the sport – was cruelly cut short by the incident.
Since then forays in rallying and GT racing by the popular Pole has resulted him gradually return to the world motorsport stage, and now he is embarking on a World Endurance Championship campaign with the ByKolles LMP1 outfit in 2017
In the wake of the announcement, Kubica was asked in an interview if he would accept an offer to drive a Formula 1 car, Kubica replied, “Yes. I would like to try a Formula One car. It has been a while, so I would have to prove myself, but I think I could do it well. I would like to relive the thrill of the Formula One experience.”
Kubica last drove a Formula 1 car during winter testing at Valencia in 2011, ending his final session at the wheel of a Lotus Renault R31 fastest of all.
Since his accident Kubica revealed, “I have tried many simulators, and I am convinced that I would drive at 80% of the F1 tracks, but not all of them. I also have to point out that testing a Formula One car is one thing, a race weekend is something totally different.”
“In my last three seasons of F1, I managed to achieve a remarkable performance level, a level I think I lack a little bit of now. In 2010 with Renault, I think I did nothing wrong and to get to that level of performance you have to work hard for so many years.”
“My physical condition is not a common one, and few people have experienced similar circumstances. Everyone reacts in a different way and that can be a very personal thing,” added 32 year old Kubica who made 76 grand prix starts, winning once and finishing on the podium 12 times.
