Formula 1 veteran Jenson Button has revealed that drug testing of drivers seems to have stopped, admitting that it has been three or four years since he was tested.
Button told The Sun, “I have not been tested this year. I don’t know of any drivers who have been tested recently. They used to test during the winter but random testing seems to have stopped. I have not had a random test for three or four years. We used to do urine tests after the races but that stopped too.”
“We have to employ PAs to do our schedules. Every day we have to tell WADA where we are and for one hour each day, we have to be exactly where we say we are.”
“We cannot keep travelling. We have to give them the address of our hotel rooms between 6-7am in the morning.”
“We have to religiously stick to that and sit there and wait, so if we are going to the bother of employing people to do the WADA schedule, then we should at least be tested. Otherwise it is a waste of money and it is an unnecessary waste of our time.”
As for the types of drugs a driver would take to boost performance, Button said, “To be honest, there is nothing to help a racing driver at the moment that I know of.”
“I suppose next year it could be more physical, so they should test next year for drivers who wanted to beef up a little bit.”
