The halo cockpit safety system, set to be mandatory on Formula 1 cars from 2018, was in the spotlight again after a fire broke out on the Renault of Kevin Magnussen in the Sepang pitlane.

Immediately after the incident many questioned whether the Dane would have escaped so rapidly from the cockpit, which within seconds was engulfed by flames, had the halo been in use.

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso, who as tested the halo has suggested a removable halo.

The Spaniard explained, “When I tried the halo in Singapore, one of the things I noticed was getting out of the car is a little bit uncomfortable, where you have to put the feet and where you have to jump.”

“For this reason they have delayed its introduction just to make sure we cover all of the possibilities. Maybe there is a way of making the halo somehow removable in a way we can jump out of the car a little bit quicker,” added Alonso.
