Honda are still debating whether they will spend engine tokens on an upgrade for the Malaysian Grand Prix and are only likely to make a final decision on the matter on Friday.

ESPN quote Honda engine boss Yusuke Hasegawa, “We are not 100 percent certain if we will install any power unit updates for this race, but we’ll look to make our final decision at the track based on the balance of performance and reliability.”

In Singapore Hasegawa suggested that they wanted to avoid taking penalties at their home grand prix, at Suzuka, and thus Sepang would be the best place to take the hit.

“I plan to [spend the remaining tokens] but currently we are struggling to spend everything,” he explained. “The R&D base in Sakura is trying to find the solution for better performance. Just spending tokens is very easy, but bringing performance is different.”

Meanwhile McLaren F1 chief Eric Bouulier is optimistic heading back to Asia, “If we can achieve reliability on both sides of the garage, I’m hopeful for a positive weekend.”

“We’ve proved recently that our package is a firm contender in the midfield pack and we have the potential to finish ahead of some strong teams, so we’ll keep fighting to maintain our position and move closer to the front of the grid.”
