McLaren team chief Eric Boullier is confident that their 2017 driver Stoffel Vandoorne will beat far more experienced drivers in F1 next year and believes that the Belgian was ready for Formula 1 when he made his debut, as stand-in for Fernando Alonso, in Bahrain.

Boullier said, “I think Stoffel in the junior categories did show his talent first, and I am sure he can be in the race. He does not have the experience of these guys, but he will grow up beating them.”

Vandoorne gave a good account of himself in Bahrain, where he made his grand prix debut. He replaced injured Alonso and was a match for Jenson Button all weekend, beating him in the race and scoring the team’s first point of the season when he finished tenth in the race.

“I think in Bahrain when he stepped in he showed everybody he was ready to race in Formula One,” declared Boullier. “I think next year he will be a little bit of a youngster, which we can develop and he can benefit from the experience of our other two drivers.”

Vandoorne will replace Jenson Button in the McLaren, alongside Fernando Alonso, next season.
