The Turn 1 incident at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix – involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari duo Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, continues to capture headlines and generated heated debate with the Dutch teenager on the attack.
Speaking to Dutch media after the race Verstappen declared, “I think they should be ashamed to cause a crash like that with their amount of experience and then complain about me.”
“Then they don’t have to make a drama about what happened afterwards. They have to understand I’m not happy with them screwing up my entire race,” said the 18 year old with 32 race starts of the two drivers with five world titles and 425 grand prix starts between them.
After analysing the replays, Verstappen is adamant that Vettel was the guilty party in the La Source hairpin fracas that ultimately compromised the race for the trio.
“There was room for three cars. When I got alongside Kimi, he started squeezing me. If Vettel hadn’t turned in and left one more metre of room, we would have all gotten through. On the video you can clearly see when Vettel turns in, he drives into Raikkonen. And then Kimi’s car bumps into mine.”
Later in the race Raikkonen launched a tirade of expletives, over the team radio, as Verstappen blocked him aggressively in a sprint up the hill to Les Combes, where the Ferrari had to cut the corner to avoid the ‘very wide’ Red Bull.
“If they screw up my race, I’m not going to make it easy for them. I think they should understand that,” said Verstappen.
“I’m not going to say: ‘come on through’. But all that happened after Turn 1. If Turn 1 hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have been so aggressive and pushed Raikkonen out like that.”
Verstappen finished 11th in the race, with Raikkonen ninth and Vettel sixth.
