Lewis Hamilton made it a clean sweep of top of the time sheet finishes in all three practice sessions for the European Grand Prix, as yet again he went fastest of all in FP3 by a quarter second over his teammate Nico Rosberg as the Mercedes duo once again dominated.
The reigning world champion’s best lap time of 1:44.352, around the fast and tricky Baku Street Circuit, was a quarter of a second up on Rosberg in second and well over a second better than third best Nico Hulkenberg in the Force India.
Hamilton’s best lap came late in a session, up to that point Rosberg seemed to have the edge, and the Briton is clearly on the front foot ahead of qualifying later in the day.
The Mercedes cars were again a class above their rivals, with Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg third fastest but over a second off Hamilton’s time. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in fifth.
The session ended under a red flag due to debris on track after Force India’s Sergio Perez slammed the same trackside barrier that caught out Ricciardo a day earlier.
Williams’ Valtteri Bottas did not complete a lap after driving over a pitlane drain cover which flicked up and punctured a hole in the car’s sidepod.
