Less than four-tenths of a second covered the top five cars at the end of the second free practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
As in the morning session it was Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton who had the upper hand, this time though it was the Ferrari of championship leader Sebastian Vettel keeping him in sight, with just 0.147 of a second separating the duo on the timing screens at the end of the 90 minutes session.
Valtteri Bottas was a close third in the second Mercedes, followed by the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, and the sister Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.
After a session in which grip was again very much at a premium (numerous drivers survived spins or off-track moments), Kevin Magnussen was a strong seventh for Haas, ahead of the improved McLaren of Fernando Alonso.
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg and Haas’s Romain Grosjean completed the top ten.
